Shabbat Falafel

Gisteraand was my kamermaat se welkom terug van Israel Birthright Shabbat partytjie. Tuisgemaakte falafel is lekker!

Last night was my roommate's welcome back from Israel Birthright Shabbat party. I love falafel, so I made it for the occasion. I used this recipe, except without the wheat flour. Homemade falafel is awesome!

Jai Ho

Ek leer my vriend Chris hoe om Indiese kos te maak soos my vriendin Nikita in Boston (nou Londen) het baie jare gelede vir my gedoen.

Ten eerste was Chris en ek 'n bietjie verdwaal.

I'm teaching my friend Chris how to cook Indian food, like my friend Nikita in Boston (now London) did for me many years ago. First, Chris needed an Indian cuisine "starter pack." There was one problem. The only Indian grocery store that I knew of in San Francisco was Bombay Bazar in the Mission, which is no longer in business :(. Most Indian ingredients are also available at organic grocery stores like Other Avenues, but the spices are usually more expensive. Fortunately we found out about Jai Ho near Japantown.

At first, Chris and I were a little lost. The street address of the store was on Fillmore, but we couldn't find it. Finally we saw a Jai Ho sign that pointed around the corner. It was on the other side of the shopping center. It was much smaller than Bombay Bazar, but had everything we needed! Here are the ingredients we bought:

And here's the dinner of matar paneer (Indian cheese and green peas) and jeera chawal (cumin rice).

Jai Ho is also the name of this song from the film Slumdog Millionaire and means "may victory be yours."

Nou / Now

Die woord 'nou' in ASL is baie, baie moeilik vir my.

My sign language course is going well, with one exception. The word "now" in ASL is extremely difficult for me. It uses the letter "y" with both hands. I can make the "y" with my right hand, but it's nearly impossible with my left hand. I just hope it isn't another symptom of my ulnar neuropathy nie :(.
