Roer

Roommate's Cold

My kamermaat is baie siek.

My roommate is very sick. He thought that it was getting better yesterday, but his cold is even worse today. I feel sorry for him, but I'm also worried. I need to train for Bay to Breakers, which takes place in May. I don't want to get sick!

Drome in Afrikaans

Dreams in Afrikaans

Ek: Aangename kennis.
Kamermaat: Aangename kennis.
Ek: Hoe gaan dit?
Kamermaat: Dit gaan goed, dankie. En self?
Ek: Goed, dankie.

Ek: Ek praat 'n bietjie Afrikaans. Praat u Afrikaans?
Ander toeris: Ja, ek praat Afrikaans... [Vinnige Afrikaans]
Ek: Ek verstaan nie.
Ander toeris: [Vinnige Afrikaans]
Ek: Ek verstaan nie!

This morning I had a dream with a bit of Afrikaans. I was in a new apartment with an Afrikaner roommate.

Me: Pleased to meet you.
Roommate: Pleased to meet you.
Me: How are you?
Roommate: I'm well, thanks. And you?
Me: Good, thanks.

Not much, but it's better than my first dream with Afrikaans. In that dream, I was in South Africa with a Dutch woman who was also a tourist.

Me: I speak a little Afrikaans. Do you speak Afrikaans?
Other Tourist: Yes, I speak Afrikaans... [Rapid Afrikaans]
Me: I don't understand.
Other Tourist: [Rapid Afrikaans]
Me: I don't understand!

Oggend Hardloop

Ek is weer moeg by die werk. My bene is so seer!

I'm tired again at work. I usually run at night, but today I ran in the morning. It was quite difficult. I didn't want to get out of bed, but I forced myself to. My legs are so sore!

Sonnige Dag

I love this morning's weather! San Francisco usually has a lot of fog, but for the past few weeks we've had a lot of rain here. On Monday, there was a big rainshower with hail, which is very rare. Finally we have a sunny day! I'm at work and don't have my camera, but here's an old photo of sunny San Francisco from a little bike tour around the city.

Potjie, Poykey, Potchee?

I bought a South African cast-iron pot yesterday! Slow-cooked stew is a very popular, traditional food in South Africa that I really want to make. Most Afrikaans-speakers pronounce potjie as "poykey," but some South Africans, including the Cape Malays, pronounce it as "potchee." Thanks to Åsa from www.taste-africa.com and Gabrielle from theLearn Afrikaans Yahoo Group for their explanations.
