YES Success!

On Saturday, November 18, 2006, Pride Comics was one of several LGBT community groups at the Youth Empowerment Summit (YES) in San Francisco.

"YES is a FREE Bay Area conference for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, intersex, queer, questioning, and straight ally youth dedicated to fostering safe schools and youth activism. YES focuses on giving youth organizers tools to combat homophobia and transphobia in schools."
--GSA Network, the organizer of the event

An estimated 350 middle and high school students from across California attended the event!

Workshops included GSAs in religious high schools, transgender inclusion, zine creation, and the history of LGBT activism.

Meeting kids as young as thirteen who were out and proud, was simply amazing. Allies and adult supporters were also there. I wish I remembered to get a pic of PFLAG!

The burrito lunch was a hit, thanks to the awesome volunteers of GSA Network!

Blake Curia, creator of the upcoming Pride Comics series "The Dropouts" was also in attendance (though a bit camera-shy), along with Pride Comics volunteer Desmond Miller. By the end of the event, over 150 copies were given away. The kids loved it, and during breaks and lunch you could see dozens reading Pride High in the school. We were asked by several attendees if we would be there next year. Most definitely!
